Chatwood agrees to contract with Blue Jays, which originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
About an hour after the news broke that Jon Lester was on his way to the Nationals, another jug of the Cubs’ 2020 rotation apparently agreed to a new contract.
Tyler Chatwood signed with the Blue Jays, pending a physical Jon Heyman, MLB Network, first reported. According to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, the two parties have agreed on a $ 3 million deal for one year, but with incentives, Chatwood could earn up to $ 5.5 million.
The right-hander started the 2020 season by allowing just one run in his first two outings together. But soon, injuries and inconsistencies plagued the starting pitcher. He became a free agent after the season.
Chatwood’s three seasons with the Cubs were a roller coaster. In 2018, he led the National League on the run. The following year, he seemed to find his support as a reliever.
He earned a spot at the end of the rotation in Spring Training last season. A combination of José Quintana’s thumb injury, Lester’s slow progress in form and Chatwood’s effective approach to the rest period before the summer camp drove him to the number 3 slot in the turn-coming week.
As a result of an injury, Chatwood started just five in 2020, recording an ERA of 5.30, which is in line with his 2018 ERA.
