Critics of ‘Saturday Night Live’ say that Joe Biden avoided Kamala Harris in the first show of 2021

“Saturday Night Live” returned from its winter break with a slightly different approach to politics that many viewers immediately noticed.

After relentlessly mocking Donald Trump every week for four years, the popular NBC sketch show did not open with an imitation of President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris. This is not to say that the episode shied away from politics. The cold, openly skewed representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene, Mark Zuckerberg and Tom Brady, while the series ‘Weekend Update’ segment comments on the riot at the US Capitol.

The program had a lot of ground to cover after he left American politics during a turbulent time. In January alone, there were the riots, a historic second indictment of Trump and the GameStop boom that threw Wall Street through a loop. Despite the inauguration and Biden’s first week in office, which also took place during the program’s break, many critics of the program noted that ‘SNL’ was not interested in roasting the sitting president in the same way as when Trump in the oval was not.

“Why avoid SNL the best source of comedy by giving Joe Biden a free pass?” added another user. “Poor old Joe is an endless supply of comedy.”

“I would love to see Jim Carey play Biden again, he’s funny. Are we going to mock President Biden soon, like when SNL mocked Trump and other presidents while they were in office? Execution orders would be a funny piece be! ” another person wrote.

Although Biden has only been president for a week and the program has only aired one episode in 2021, many people seem convinced that ‘Saturday Night Live’ will never mock Biden or Harris. However, the program was not shy about regularly parodying both politicians during the campaign.

Former cast member Maya Rudolph was ready to portray Harris during sketches over the debates, while the program tapped Jim Carrey to portray the then presidential candidate. In one of his last performances before going on break, Carrey revealed that he will no longer play Biden on ‘SNL’, which will give the position to the cast Alex Moffat.

“Although my term was only 6 weeks, I was delighted to be elected as your SNL president … comedy’s highest duty,” Carrey tweeted for Moffat’s debut. ‘I would like to continue knowing that Biden is the winner, because I nailed it. But I’m just one in a long line of proud, sweeping SNL Bidens! ‘
