Last summer, a Southern California company called Hyperion started a wild hydrogen powered hyper engine called XP-1. The company referred to the XP-1 concept as an ‘educational tool’, but there’s more than that, it seems, because it took the XP-1 for a turn in the streets of Las Vegas, according to ‘ a report published Friday by Motor1.
If you forgot, the Hyperion XP-1 is a hydrogen fuel cell engine that claims a distance of 1,000 miles per tank of hydrogen, 1500 horsepower, a 0-60 time of about 2.2 seconds and a top speed of 221 . km / h On the contrary, Hyperion claims that there are no batteries on board to store energy (as in the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo, for example), which reduces weight.
Despite the lack of a physical CES this year, Hyperion decided to go to Vegas anyway, and it drove the XP-1 up and down the Strip, as well as in the desert. We do not have many details on exactly how fast it went or what the business did in the desert, but it is interesting to see that the car was covered in camouflage as it has already been seen without it.
Hyperion plans to offer the XP-1 for sale to the public from 2022, but with the bulk of the planned production of 300 vehicles for 2023.
Hyperion did not immediately respond to Roadshow’s request for comment.
