Cow Tecmo sues seller of DVDs with unauthorized dead or alive

Cow Tecmo has announced that he has filed charges against an unnamed suspect who released an unauthorized DVD with modified material from the Dead or alive series. [Thanks, Famitsu.]

The suspect recorded recording footage of several games, including Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation. Further modifications were made to the footage, such as the removal of character clothing. The results were compiled into a DVD which was then sold at an auction site.

Despite the character changes, Koei Tecmo still considered it a malicious copyright infringement and reported the matter to the Kanagawa Prefectural Police Department. The company intends to file a criminal case as well as a civil case against the suspect; the latter to claim restitution for copyright infringement by reproducing and distributing the creations without the authorization of the company.

The Dead or alive series originated as a fighting game. The latest title on the mainline, Dead or Alive 6, launched worldwide simultaneously for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on March 1, 2019. The series is also known for the Xtreme spin-offs, which feature mostly female characters from the games. The continuous Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation added even more original characters, such as Monica and Loberia.
