COVID Vaccine Updates: Scientists Concerned About New York’s ‘Escape Variant’

NEW YORK (WABC) – Health officials are warning about the spread of a COVID-19 variant in New York, saying current vaccines may be less effective against the new strain as more Americans get the chance.

“Some scientists call it the ‘escape variant’ because it may have the ability to evade our immune system,” said Dr. Alok Patel, medical associate of ABC News, said. “Possibly making our treatments less effective.”

Meanwhile, nearly half of the country eases pandemic restrictions, and looks to return to normal. Dr. Anthony Fauci continues to warn Americans to be vigilant against the virus.

The White House is setting a new hopeful benchmark, with the Fourth of July as a symbolic goal to motivate Americans to continue to follow the rules.

More than 11% of adults are now fully vaccinated.
