COVID vaccine updates: more contagious variants spread rapidly in US, study says

NEW YORK (WABC) – As more cases of the highly contagious variants found in the UK and South Africa are discovered in the US, the race is on track to identify, identify and test the worrying mutations to see how well the vaccines have been rolled out can protect against them.

It is a race against time, but most countries do not have enough or enough capacity to monitor these rapidly emerging new variants. Although there is now surveillance in the US, we still rely on information from scientists in the UK.

Calls grow for US to rely on quick tests to fight pandemic
While President Joe Biden promises to get younger students back in the classroom by spring, some experts want the U.S. to focus its COVID-19 testing system less on medical precision than on mass screening, which they say could save hundreds of thousands of lives.

As vaccinations increase slowly, they say, after millions of faster tests that are cheaper and faster, but technically less accurate than the predominant genetic tests, they can improve the chances of identifying sick people during the early days of infection, when they most is contagious.

The case for rapid testing on a large scale is getting a boost from universities and school systems that have taken the approach of staying open through the latest waves of the pandemic.
