COVID update: Jones Beach vaccination mega site opens as confirmed by COVID variant group on Long Island

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – The State of New York opens its third mass vaccination center in our area on Thursday morning – the fourth across the country – at Jones Beach State Park on Long Island.

The mega-website, which is also the state’s first transit website, opens at 08:00

Starting today in New York City, vaccines will be available at the Fort Washington Avenue Armory in Washington Heights.

The surveys at all sites in New York are available by appointment for the 7 million New Yorkers who are in groups 1a and 1b, which includes seniors 65 years and older.

Governor Andrew Cuomo estimates that it will take more than 5 months to vaccinate everyone in the groups.

Both openings come as New York sees more cases of the more contagious COVID-19 variant first reported in the UK.

There are now at least 15 confirmed cases across the country in two separate groups.

The latest group was identified on Wednesday with two cases each in Suffolk and Nassau. A fifth case in Queens is also being linked.

This group is not related to the previous group of cases in Saratoga Springs that were confirmed last week.

In light of this, the Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, has called for flight restrictions to prevent more cases of the infectious strain coming here from the UK and elsewhere.

The mega-beach at Jones Beach opens Thursday morning with a news conference, but the Nassau County executive is not expected to attend.

Laura Curran is being quarantined at home after possible exposure to COVID-19. She apparently feels good.

So far, a little over 700,000 people have received the vaccine across the country.
