Members of the Effingham County Health Committee were briefed Tuesday on the status of COVID-19 vaccinations in the country.

Karen Feldkamp of the province’s health department said 14,656 shots were fired and 5,698 people were completely vaccinated. This is a little over 16% of the population of the country. According to Feldkamp, 50% of the people over the age of 65 have been vaccinated.

There are two vaccine clinics planned this week. The Wednesday clinic is full, but the Thursday clinic is still open. Read more at www.effcohealth.org.

Feldkamp said ‘it’s a bit discouraging’, but health officials are starting to see an increase in COVID-positive cases, and 160 people in the country are currently in quarantine.

Health department administrator Jeff Workman said he was most concerned about the COVID variant, which Feldkamp said was “more contagious and easier to transmit”.

Feldkamp reminded that ‘we are not in the bridge phase, we are still in phase 4. This is not the time to stop wearing masks and stop with social distance.’

In a related note, the Illinois Department of Public Health on Tuesday reported a COVID-related death in Shelby County, that of a woman in her 60s.
