COVID NYC Update: Mayor de Blasio says the goal is to vaccinate 5 million NYers by June, the Javits Center website launches 24/7

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – New York’s goal is to fully vaccinate five million New Yorkers by June.

This is what Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Saturday afternoon during a celebration of a new vaccination site in the Bronx.

“Bronx is going to help move forward, give a head start in restoring New York City,” he said.

When the Co-Op City site is at full strength, de Blasio says 1,000 will be vaccinated in the community every day.

“What a difference it will make,” he said.

According to the mayor, Co-Op City is one of the first places to do home-bound senior vaccinations.

“Now that we have the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, we can reach our older people,” he said.

In the Co-Op City, 50 seniors have already been vaccinated.

The number of New Yorkers vaccinated now exceeds 3 million.

Early Saturday morning, the Javits Center began accepting appointments 24 hours a day in an effort to get more New Yorkers vaccinated.

The state-run vaccination facility went into 24-hour mode.

This was made possible by the Johnson & Johnson vaccine approved last Saturday, and doses began arriving in New York during the week.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is only single, making it easier for people to get vaccinated quickly.

Many were happy to make an appointment on Saturday morning.

There was also promising news from the mayor that he would make an announcement next week about high schools – and when they would be able to learn to teach in person again.

The news comes as the positivity rates in the area are slowly declining.

High schools returned last week.

The mayor says the goal is to have all students back five days a week for the start of the next day in September, for full day tuition.
