COVID NYC update: Connecticut patient in New York City hospital tests positive for coronavirus variant from South Africa

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – A patient in a hospital in New York tested positive for the COVID-19 variant from South Africa.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement during his Monday briefing, saying the patient was transferred from Connecticut to NYC Hospital.

Officials say there is no evidence of distribution in New York State so far.

“The South African variant is concerned about how lethal it is and how it relates to the vaccine,” Cuomo said.

The Connecticut Department of Health confirmed the positive case in a statement.

“Governor Lamont and public health officials announced today that the B.1.351 variant of the COVID-19 virus, the so-called” South African “variant, has been detected in a patient in Connecticut who is currently being admitted out of hospital. with the virus… The individual’s condition improves. This is the first known case of the B.1.351 variant in a Connecticut resident. “

Meanwhile, officials say 3.2 million have received their vaccinations nationwide and more than 1 million New Yorkers.

The static positive percentage is 3.53%.

Long Island still has the highest positivity of the regions at 4.62%, while Mid-Hudson has the second highest at 4.53%.

The Bronx still has the highest positivity in NYC at 6.11%.
