COVID NYC Update: 5 vaccination sites in New York will open Sunday, including two 24-hour locations

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – In the pressure to end the coronavirus pandemic, New York City opened five new vaccination centers on Sunday, and not a moment too soon.

The latest positivity rate in the city is more than 6.5%.

The efforts could help reverse the trend, with some vaccination sites open even 24 hours a day.

The two mega-sites that open Sunday will be open 24 hours a day, one at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park and the other is Bath Gate Industrial Park in the Bronx.

The city’s health commissioner held a tour of one of the three community vaccination centers at a high school in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx on Saturday.

When the vaccine is available to the general public, they can vaccinate up to 2,000 people a day.

By the end of the week, 12 community establishments will be open. This is by appointment only on the city’s websites for eligible groups, which currently include health care workers and residents and nursing homes.

As of Monday, it expands to seniors over 75, teachers and transit workers.

By the end of the week, the city will open a total of 160 vaccination sites in all five districts.

Governor Andrew Cuomo estimates with the available vaccine, it will be April before everyone in the eligible groups who want a vaccine will be able to get it.

Those who are qualified can register for a vaccine on the city’s website. Starting Monday, a phone-in-call system will also be up and running.
