COVID-19 vaccinations are rescheduled by Wayne County Public Health Division due to stock shortages

DETROIT The Wayne County Health Department must reschedule the vaccinations for Tuesday, Jan. 19 and Wednesday, Jan. 20, due to an empty batch of vaccine received, according to Michigan state provincial health officials.

People with appointments for the first dose of vaccinations currently planned for both days will be notified individually by Wayne County Department of Public Health of their new appointment.

Planned vaccinations are taking place at the new vaccination site in Wayne County in the Vista Tech Center of Schoolcraft College, located at 18600 Haggerty Road in Livonia.

The rescheduling affects approximately 1,400 people, mostly health workers, first responders and essential workers who are part of the Phase 1A group on the vaccination priority list.

Individuals planning to receive their second dose, or those who will be vaccinated at a local hospital, nursing home, or long-term care facility, are not affected.

Wayne County needs to reschedule and relocate its vaccination staff because it has depleted its stockpile of Pfizer-produced COVID-19 vaccine.

According to Wayne County, the state has stopped supplying him with the Pfizer vaccine for the first doses, and he currently only supplies the Moderna vaccine to the Wayne County Public Health Division for new first doses.

“The doses of Moderna vaccines must be treated differently from the Pfizer vaccine. “The country will only receive the stock of the state’s Modern vaccine on Tuesday, which makes it too late to handle scheduled vaccinations that day or Wednesday,” reads a statement from Wayne County about the supply shortage.

Wayne County vaccinations for Phase 1A people and essential Phase 1B frontline workers will resume Thursday at VistaTech Center at Schoolcraft College.

Additional vaccination sites will be announced as more vaccine becomes available at the state of Michigan, the province said.

“We ran out of the Pfizer vaccine Saturday afternoon,” said Dr. Mouhanad Hammami, chief health strategist at Wayne County. “We know this is frustrating and we apologize for the inconvenience. Our team is working hard to vaccinate as many residents as possible, but the shortage of supplies from the state of Michigan remains a challenge. ‘

Wayne County is currently vaccinating health workers, EMS and essential workers in phases 1A and 1B.

Elderly people over 65 should plan a vaccine through their health system, not the province’s health department.

Up to 12 teachers, in partnership with Wayne RESA, will receive vaccinations through their school districts.

Other groups in phase 1B must register online or through their employers to request an appointment for vaccination with the Department of Public Health.
