Press Release of the Humboldt County Joint Information Center:
Thirty additional cases of COVID-19 were reported today. It was determined that a case reported last week was from outside the province, and the total number of Humboldt County residents who tested positive for the virus now stands at 1,957.
Late yesterday, the state issued a health order to limit the impact of a surge in COVID-19 patients in regions where the high care unit is at 0%. Hospitals in provinces that fall under the Order must cancel non-emergency operations. These hospitals also have the capacity to transfer patients to and from other regions, including the Northern California region, where ICU capacity is 24.4%.
The Humboldt County Health Officer, dr. Ian Hoffman, said the purpose of the order is to make ICUs and other hospital beds available near the place where patients live. “The cancellation of elective surgeries in areas with increasing hospitalizations will free up beds almost immediately,” he said, adding that elective surgeries in Humboldt County are not currently affected as the country does not meet the criteria. “Our community has done pretty well to protect our healthcare system and maintain our hospital capacity. We must all honor this commitment to each other and follow all COVID safety precautions. ”
