Long Island has seen a new increase in the COVID-19 positive infection rate, along with nearly 3,200 recently reported cases, according to data released by the New York State Department of Health on Saturday, January 2nd.
There were 1,786 new cases in Suffolk County and another 1,409 in Nassau for a total of 3,195.
The positive infection rate on Long Island over the past five days is as follows.
- Monday, December 28: 6.85 percent
- Tuesday, December 29: 7.49 percent
- Wednesday, December 30: 8.04 percent
- Thursday, December 31: 8.42 percent
- Friday, January 1: 8.82 percent
There are a total of 1,415 hospitalizations on Long Island as of Saturday, with about 25 percent of the hospital beds still available in Nassau and Suffolk.
There are currently 647 COVID-19 patients being treated in 818 Long Island ICU units, with 24 percent of the beds available.
There were 25 new COVID-related deaths on Long Island – 17 in Suffolk County and eight in Nassau County, and 128 across the country. There were now 30,337 COVID deaths across the country during the pandemic.

“With 2020 now behind us, we may have brighter days ahead, but to get there quickly will require all New Yorkers to stay smart and stay united,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said Saturday. “We have the vaccine, and that’s good news, but it’s going to take months before we reach the critical mass, which makes it as important as ever that we do not allow COVID fatigue to get the best of us.
“The state works 24 hours a day with the medical community not only to ensure that vaccines are distributed as quickly and efficiently as possible, but also to further increase bed capacity so that hospitals are not overwhelmed.
“However frightening it may seem after all this time, it is critical that the rest of us remain tough and continue our efforts to slow down the spread. We have already come this far and we will finally be at the end of the tunnel if we all just do our part. ‘
