Moderna is working on a booster for its two-dose COVID-19 vaccine that will be available by the fall to prevent a resurgence of new cases during the winter.
Stephane Bancel, chief executive, told CNBC that the company “wants to make sure there are high-quality ingredients available in the fall so that we can protect people in the next fall and winter season in the US”
Last month, the National Institutes of Health began testing several versions of Moderna boosters that could potentially be used to combat COVID-19 variants, including the South African strain that researchers and health workers have been distributing since the beginning.
If the food and drug administration is approved, the enhancer can be cleaned for emergency use without undergoing lengthy clinical trials beforehand.
“We believe that especially high-risk people should get a boost in the fall, and we want to make sure we get the best possible boost,” Bancel said.
Bancel said Moderna hopes to submit data to officials within a few months, stating that “our goal is to work really hard to get it ready before the fall.”
“I expect in the next year or so, we’re going to see a lot of variations,” he said. “But as more and more people become vaccinated or naturally infected, the rate of the variant will slow down and the virus will stabilize as you can see with the flu.”
According to Bancel, Moderna is working on a vaccine that could potentially protect against COVID and the seasonal flu.
