Deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the province of San Luis Obispo have now exceeded more than 100 cases.
The province reported a total of 101 COVID-19 deaths on Friday, an increase of six from the previous day.
Health officials say the recent patients were between the ages of 70 and 100 years old.
In December, the province recorded 44 deaths attributed to COVID-19. This week alone, 13 additional deaths were reported.
“This virus has claimed more than 100 local lives,” said Dr. Penny Borenstein, district health officer, said. “These are mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, children and grandparents who were not ready to die and whose deaths were in fact preventable.”
Provincial officials say the deaths of another 28 people are being investigated if possible caused by COVID-19.
San Luis Obispo County also added 294 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the province’s total to 8,891 confirmed cases on January 8th.
Health officials say 40 people are being admitted to hospital, including 14 patients who are in the ICU. Another 3,072 people are recovering and health officials say 9,652 people have recovered.
According to California State’s online COVID 19 dashboard, there are currently 12 ICU beds available in San Luis Obispo County.

The location of 60 additional cases is investigated, and another eight are referred to as ‘other’, which includes communities with less than five cases. The Department of Public Health does not identify these sites.
Joint COVID-19 testing sites are currently open to the public in San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Morro Bay, Grover Beach and Nipomo.
