COVID-19 claims 12 lives in BC, reported 465 infections

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As the province continues to vaccinate so many high-risk people against COVID-19, another 12 people have died from the virus.

In a joint release with the provincial health officer, dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix reported another 465 coronavirus infections on Tuesday.

The number of hospitalizations due to the virus has declined since last week, with 70 of the current 329 patients in the ICU.

While the province had to rework its vaccination schedule – following a delay in Pfizer shipping – 93,369 British Columbians have been vaccinated so far.

“The COVID-19 vaccines bring hope and challenge: hope, because they know that many people will have immunity to this virus in a few months; and challenge due to the current limited supply – in BC, Canada and around the world. The vaccines are our way forward to the brighter days ahead. Until this path is wide enough for everyone, however, we must continue to focus on our individual efforts, ”reads the release.

Dix said earlier in the day that the Moderna vaccine would have to be the “workhorse vaccine for the first doses” while he waited for more doses. He added that the second doses are less worrying compared to the delay in getting more people their first doses, which will depend on future deliveries.

Since the onset of the pandemic, 1,090 people have died in CO vID-19 in BC and 61,912 have contracted the virus.

There were no new outbreaks to report, and the one at the Emerald at Elim Village in Surrey was terminated.

According to Fraser Health, there have also been outbreaks at Maple Ridge Seniors Village in Maple Ridge and Guildford Seniors Village in Surrey.
