COVID-19 aid funds: Mayor Lightfoot gave Chicago police $ 280 million to cover overtime

CHICAGO (WLS) – Chicago Tribune reporting found that Chicago spent a significant amount of COVID-19 aid funds on police.

Some mayors and community groups are expected to hold a news conference on Thursday morning to question Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s allocation of the aid funds.

Chicago received $ 1.2 billion from the federal government for COVID-19 relief; more than $ 280 million went to the Chicago Police Department, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The money was largely used for overtime by the police and the response to the civil unrest last summer and increased security during the November election.

Other money went to other agencies, as well as O’Hare and Midway airports.

The group of mayors said money had to go to areas in need of help, such as evicted tenants, small businesses and public health services.

They will outline the findings in the report this morning and set out how they want Lightfoot to prioritize the next wave of funding.

Lightfoot’s office did not return ABC7’s request for comment.
