The island set a new daily record for positive cases of the coronavirus, with 116 cases found from 1,634 tests.

The latest result yields a 7.1 percent positivity rate for the virus.

The surge means there have been 370 new cases in just five days, and there are now 871 people with the coronavirus on the island, which is 49.1 percent of all recorded cases since the pandemic began in March.

Twenty-eight people are in the hospital due to the disease, with two facing the last update, and there are still six people in intensive care.

There are 20 new cases classified as local dispatch with known contacts, and 91 cases are investigated – in residents without known links to other sources and no recent travel history.

Five of the new cases come from overseas, and two residents arriving from Atlanta last Saturday are positive on day four.

Three residents who returned from Boston, New York and London on March 30 were all infected on their day 8 tests.

There have been 24 fixes since the last update.

The latest update brings the island’s active cases to 871, with 843 under public health monitoring.

Health Minister Kim Wilson warned that there were “voice notes and messages circulating in the community warning people”.

She added: ‘I will declare again. If you have any questions about vaccinating Covid-19, talk to your doctor.

Going to reliable sources for information, coronavirus.gov.bm, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the USA, the World Health Organization or Public Health England, are some of the sites that provide current, accurate information.

“We must continue to work together to stop the spread of the coronavirus and protect our most vulnerable citizens.”

Ms Wilson appealed to anyone who is not feeling well to stay home, consult their doctor and get an appointment for a test.

With the island in phase 3 of its vaccination program, she has appealed to anyone who is not registered, to report for the jab – and to wear proper mask cover when going to the vaccination center.

In a series of tweets, Prime Minister David Burt said that the “number of new cases is worrying and caused by:

1) Continued mixing of households contrary to advice.

2) Large spread in workplaces (b4 working remotely) where people did not wear masks and which spread infections (reason for today’s high number from the test of Wo).
