Oklahoma’s Corporation Commission voted 2-1 on Tuesday night to issue an order calling for utilities and power companies in Oklahoma to prioritize health and safety over businesses when making decisions about the conversion of power.
“This is a dire situation,” Brandy Wreath, director of public utilities, told commissioners during the meeting.
Wreath told commissioners some businesses were asked by utilities to reduce power and refused.
The order gives power companies the ability to make decisions to divert power. Wreath said this order is necessary to prevent possible loss of life.
An OG&E representative was present at the call and supported the order.
Wreath said extra gas freezes could come this coming Wednesday, and if there is not enough wind for wind generation, there may still be a shortage of energy.
Commissioners Todd Hiett and Dana Murphy voted in favor of the order. Bob Anthony voted against it, saying he believes there are unintended consequences and concerns regarding contract issues.
