Coronavirus pandemic: Los Angeles County sees increase in MIS-C cases even as COVID hospitalizations decrease

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – Amid a decline in coronavirus hospitalizations in Los Angeles County, health officials are drawing attention to how COVID-19 affects children.

As schools move closer to the reopening of personal education, there are now 100 cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome, a serious condition associated with coronavirus.

This is a 77% increase in MIS-C cases over the past month. Officials suspect it is related to a boom caused by holiday activities.

Austin Beutner, superintendent of the United School District in Los Angeles, said campuses could reopen by April 9, depending on the availability of vaccines.

As of Monday, California will allocate about 10% of the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines to teachers and support staff, officials said.
