The Oregon Health Authority on Saturday announced 1,643 new confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus as well as 28 new deaths, driving the total death toll to at least 1,603 during the pandemic.
The vast majority of people who allegedly died were in their 80s or 90s – and one person was 100 years old. According to the state, three people died in their 70s and one person in their 60s succumbed to COVID-19 complications.
State health officials also reported that 8,768 doses of vaccines were administered to Oregonians on Friday, and another 4,680 were administered in previous days, but were added to the state’s database on Friday. These figures mean that Oregon has so far administered 34% of its current vaccine supply, a 5% increase from earlier this week.
On Friday, Gov. Kate Brown announced that she had instructed the National Guard to help vaccinate Salem Health – a move that is expected to help the state achieve its goal of administering 12,000 vaccine doses a day.
Oregon is one of the many states that are struggling to administer vaccines as quickly as residents want them to because of a combination of factors, including the reliance on hospital systems to administer the doses, a lack of trained individuals to administer the vaccines serve and the confidence in a driven approach it wants to vaccinate hundreds of thousands of health workers in front of the rest of the state’s population.
The state hopes to reach its goal of 12,000 a day against vaccines by next week.
December has so far been the deadliest month of the pandemic, with at least 472 deaths, which is almost as many as the first six months of the pandemic combined.
