Coronavirus in Oregon: 517 new cases, 38 deaths as the state reports that some people have been fully vaccinated is positive

The Oregon Health Authority on Tuesday announced 517 new cases of COVID-19, along with 38 new deaths, increasing the death toll from the coronavirus in the state to 2,094.

The new cases come because four people in Oregon tested positive for COVID-19, even though they were fully vaccinated and enough time had elapsed to get their second doses fully effective, public health officials announced Friday.

Oregon is one of the first states in the country to identify such so-called “breakthrough cases” where people who are considered immune are now sick with the disease. Since the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech are presumably almost 94% or 95% effective, the breakthrough cases were not ‘unexpected’, said dr. Sidelinger, state epidemiologist, said.

State health officials are taking samples taken from the four people who were fully vaccinated and tested positive. They had no symptoms or mild symptoms.

The snow in the Portland area has forced the state to close the masses of COVID-19 vaccination sites Friday and Saturday and the Portland International Airport or Saturday and Sunday at the Oregon Convention Center. More than 12,000 Oregonians would be vaccinated at these two sites and would be contacted by staff to reschedule them for a later date.
