Coronavirus in Oregon: 1,010 new cases, 2 deaths as only 24% of the distributed vaccines were given

State health officials on Saturday announced another 1,010 confirmed and suspected cases of COVID-19, as well as two more deaths, bringing the death toll from the state to 1,492 since the pandemic began and its total case status to 116,348 cases. .

State correction officials also announced on Saturday another death of a prisoner who tested positive for COVID-19 at the Two Rivers Correctional Institute in Umatilla. The man, whose age is between 50 and 60 years old, is the 23rd prisoner to die after testing positive.

Vaccine administration is still lagging behind in Oregon, as in the entire country. State health officials said 190,500 doses were delivered across Oregon. Yet only 45,295 doses have been administered, meaning that approximately 76% of the distributed vaccines have not yet been given.

The Department of Corrections told staff this week that it had administered 400 doses of the Moderna vaccine. More rounds of vaccinations will only start on January 11 due to the vaccination schedules, the department said.

The Oregon health authority said 880 vaccines administered Friday were recorded across the country, including 419 doses administered Friday and 461 shots earlier that had not been recorded. All of the vaccinations took place at hospitals, long-term care facilities, EMS agencies, urgent care institutions and local health departments, the agency said.
