Control developer says Sony was ‘a little more ready’ for the next generation than Microsoft

Developing games for next-generation consoles is challenging, especially if you are developing them for current generation at the same time, as Control developer Remedy was. According to Remedy’s Thomas Puha, the PS5 and Xbox series consoles were not equally challenging to develop. On the Next-Gen Console Watch, Puha said Sony was a little more ready with its early PS5 development tools, and said it was initially easier to get games like Control working on the PS5 than for the Xbox Series X and S.He said both machines were still great for making games, and although both still work out problems at a systematic level, it’s normal for new hardware and things will get better over time.

“Sony held on to what worked, their development software and tools were pretty stable and good,” Puha said. “Microsoft chose to change a lot of things, which is probably good in the long run, but that was obviously just a bigger obstacle for our developers, because we had to rewrite a lot of different things to use specific features. “

Puha also had something to say about the Xbox Series S: namely that the development for it is indeed holding back developers at least a bit.

“It is no different from previous generations, where the system with the lowest specifications will eventually prescribe some things that you are going to do because you will have to work on the system,” he said.

“The more hardware you have, the more you end up having to compromise a bit if you’re a smaller studio like us, if you just can not spend that much time making sure all these platforms are super good.”

He added that quality assurance in particular is a big issue contributing to this, as it is more expensive to test games, the more platforms you have to test.

“I do not envy people who make Halo Infinite,” he said.

Control: Ultimate Edition is now available for PS5 and Xbox Series S and X, and both seem to be doing well. The original version was our favorite game of 2019, with our original review during the launch of The Alien World, its exciting battle and its incredible cast, screenplay and secrets.
