Colorado congressman calls for federal action on gun laws following Boulder massacre

“There are laws and legislation about common sense that we can enforce that will help make our communities safer. We just have to do it. It’s that simple,” the Colorado Democrat told John Berman, CNN, on ‘New Day ‘ said.

Ten people, including a police officer, were killed after a gunman opened fire on a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. The latest attack – one of at least six shooting incidents so far this year – has shaken a community and caused calls from Congress.

Earlier this month, the House passed HR 8 which would extend the background check of all commercial gun sales and HR 1146 to try to close the ‘Charleston Loophole’, allowing some firearms to be transferred by licensed gun dealers before the required background checks are completed.
Crow told CNN that it is now up to the Senate to act on the two bills. Senate Democrats have promised to bring the bill on the background check to the floor, despite the uphill climb to garner the 60 votes needed to bring a potential filibuster.

When asked by Berman if it was worth getting rid of the Senate Filibuster to pass the legislation, Crow replied, “Yes.”

“No one can ever say that any law or policy will prevent a specific shooting. I have never heard anyone say that the application of legislation on the prevention of gun violence to common sense will prevent every shooting and make us completely safe. not true, “Crow told CNN.” But it will make us much safer. If we kill nearly 40,000 Americans a year because of gun violence, there is a lot of room for improvement. ”

Crow added that as a legislator, his job is to try to make better policies, to make people’s lives better, to make people safe. And they deserve my action. ‘

The suspect in the Boulder shooting is in custody, but authorities did not share any information about his identity, the type of weapon used or any possible motive. The fatal shooting Monday in Colorado also comes less than a week after shooting attacks on three spas in the Atlanta area killed eight people.
