A probable cause statement in Denver’s police station described how officers responded to a report of a shooting in the western lanes around 10:45 p.m. They turned up to find a woman, later identified as Cabriales, who was wounded in a 2008 Land Rover SUV, which was reportedly littered with at least eight bullets in the windshield.

She was alone in the car at the time. Cabriales was rushed to a hospital but could not be rescued.

A friend told local news station FOX31 Denver she and Cabrieles went out to dinner together earlier in the evening, and she was on her way home when she was shot.

The teenager was, according to authorities, with Johnson, who was driving a dark-colored Honda Accord. A witness told police the shooter, who was later identified by investigators as the 14-year-old, climbed out of the passenger side of Cabriales’ vehicle and opened fire, firing six rounds, the witness said.

The pair fled in the dark-colored sedan, which was spotted later shortly after midnight Sunday, the report said.

The police officer who saw the car recognized it at an earlier incident in an area of McDonald’s, where someone fired three gunshots into the occupied restaurant, according to the probable cause statement. After the Honda sedan was spotted, a police chase ensued, the district attorney’s office said in a press release. Johnson eventually crashed into the car, and he and two young men, including the alleged shooter, were caught and handcuffed.

The official says the teenager is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree murder with extreme indifference, first-degree assault with extreme indifference and the fact that he is a serious juvenile offender.

A spokesman for McCann’s office confirmed that authorities wanted to try him as an adult. Meanwhile, Johnson was beaten with similar charges.

It was not clear if there were any motives in the shooting.

A GoFundMe page has been created to benefit Cabriales’ six-year-old son. The page describes how Cabriales “influenced so many people’s lives with her smile, love and acts of kindness.”

Since Cabriales’ death, her brother Alex Cabriales has called on McCann “to ensure that these two individuals never run free one day in their lives and kill no one else,” he told FOX31.

Alex also referred to what he described as the 14-year-old’s ‘long criminal history’, which sources confirmed to the news station.

“This is the criminal history of a 20-year career criminal,” Alex continued. “You know, he’s 14 years old. There’s no way this minor should have been … My sister now had to lose her life because the courts did not do their job.”

“We do not want this to happen to anyone again,” Alex told FOX31. “This is hell on earth.”
