Colombia classifies “absurdities” in Maduro’s statements regarding the regulation of Venezuelan migrants

(CNN Español) – Colombia rejects and classifies as “absurd” the statements made by the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, which states that the protection of Colombia is open to Venezuelan migrants and is a “payer”.

“As part of his discourse, Nicolás Maduro’s illegitimate and criminal regime reaffirms his indifferent and cruel actions towards the grave reality of humanitarian, economic, political and social reality that the Venezuelan people are facing,” the Colombian government indicated in a statement. “The Temporary Statute for the Protection of Migrants reflects the Colombian compromise to support the reconstruction of the life-long projects of our Venezuelan troops that he saw in the need to abandon his country,” the official note states.

More recently, Maduro said of the Caracas that in Venezuela hay 6 million migrant Colombians and that he never needed a provisional protection treaty.

Last February 8, the President of Colombia, Ivan Duque, announced the creation of the Temporary Protection Statute, which regulates the situation of tens of thousands of undocumented Venezuelan immigrants up to 10 years. The media only applies to Venezuelans who have been detained in Colombian territory until January 31, 2021.

In an interview with CNN, Duque said that currently in Colombia he received about 1.8 million Venezuelan migrants, of whom around 800,000 are regularized.

The mandate states that the other million, which are in Colombia, are “in very precarious conditions: they do not have the possibility of opening a bank account, they do not have the possibility of going to the regular health care system because they enter Travels of the Emergency Services, do not have the possibility of vincular work formally and because of this term also abused or contracted in conditions of inferiority front to the Colombian workers ”.
