‘Cocaine bananas’ are mistakenly sent to grocery stores

A drug dealing operation has led to the shipment of bananas that were accidentally shipped with cocaine to Canadian grocery stores, authorities said.

Kelowna police said on Tuesday that 21 kilograms of cocaine had been sent from Colombia as part of the failed drug deal, Global News reported.

“Our investigation leads us to believe that these banned drugs were not intended to end up in the Central Okanagan, and arrived here in the Okanagan Valley due to a missing pickup at some point,” said Jeff Carroll, a officer with the Kelowna Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The discovery was originally made by workers at a grocery store in Kelowna who found 12 packets of cocaine hidden under a banana transport in February 2019.

Later that day, another grocery store owner contacted the authorities to also discover the drug in the fruit delivery.

Police seized the two consignments of cocaine, which they say contained more than 800,000 doses, and launched an international investigation.
