Coast Guard rescues 3 Cubans from the deserted island where they lived on coconuts for 33 days

(CNN) – The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued three Cuban citizens from a deserted island of Bahaman, where they have been living on coconuts for 33 days, the agency announced.

“It was amazing. I do not know how they did it. I was amazed that they were as good as they were,” Lt Justin Dougherty told CNN affiliate WPLG.

While conducting routine patrols on Monday, U.S. Coast Guard air crews saw the two men and a woman waving temporary flags on Anguilla Cay, located in a chain of islands between the Lower Florida Keys and Cuba. The Coast Guard unloaded a radio, food and water to the trio on Monday and rescued them from the island on Tuesday.

The trio capsized the Cuban boat in rough waters about five weeks ago, and they swam to the island.

The trio apparently had no serious injuries, but were flown to Lower Keys Medical Center for examination.

CNN contacted the Lower Keys Medical Center for information about their condition.
