CNN editor-in-chief Chris Cillizza raised eyebrows on Wednesday, suggesting that “Trumpism” is behind the dramatic rise in the share price of struggling retailer GameStop.
GameStop Corp. ‘s share price rose 130% on Wednesday in trading of the market as amateur investors continued to support the stocks whose price has skyrocketed over the past two weeks.
Cillizza tried to explain the phenomenon in the stock market in a CNN article entitled: “How Trumpism Explains the GameStop Stock Store.”
“The core of Donald Trump’s furious populist career was – and is – this sentiment: ‘The elite think they know better than you. They think they can tell you how to live and what to believe. But guess what? We the people are smarter than the elite! ” Cillizza began.

“What made Trump’s argument so politically strong is that he did not just call out the elite. He said that Average Joes had to stand up and actually show them how wrong they were – that he was the voice for him. “best way to express their anger and frustration at the condescension of their alleged bettors. Donald Trump presented himself as a collective middle finger to the elite. And he won.”
The editor-in-chief of CNN has concluded that there is ‘no real point’ to amateur stock traders buying GameStop shares other than to show the benefits – proving to them that they are not as smart as they think and that they do not have the ability to control everything … Which in turn has its roots in Trumpism. ‘

“The whole idea of Trump’s candidacy and presidency was to keep it with the elite,” Cillizza wrote. “And then, well, there was not really a plan further. The screw was the point. The strategy … has enormous limits. If you keep it with the man, it will reach you so far. It is not a solution to any problem. It’s just a way to express frustration, anger and helplessness. “
He added, “Think of it this way: giving someone the finger can make you feel good at the moment. But it does not solve anything.”
Cillizza’s comments sparked widespread ridicule on social media.
“Okay, everyone’s going home, we have the worst chance of taking the day. No need to write anymore,” said Jeff Blehar of National Review.
“CNN is a bigger thing than GameStop,” writer Ryan James Girdusky said.
“Obviously, Cillizza has the most predictable, unfathomable misunderstanding of the GameStop thing,” wrote Washington Examiner deputy editor Grant Addison.
