“We hear a lot from people in the Republican Party about the cancellation culture,” Berman told North Carolina Republican President Michael Whatley during a New Day interview Tuesday. “You know, you’re canceling Richard Burr for his accusatory voice, which he said was a conscious voice.”

The North Carolina state GOP has condemned Burr for his vote. Burr was one of seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump.

Whatley dismissed Berman’s claim that the ‘cancel culture’ that conservatives often dispute because of its alleged censorship of Trump and other controversial Republican ideology is ‘completely different’ from the party’s decision to oust Burr. to censor.

Burr retires at the end of this election cycle.

His vote to condemn Trump was somewhat of a surprise, as he twice voted with other Republicans to find the former president’s indictment.

Burr said he believes the Senate, in the vote that it is constitutional, has set a precedent for the trial, and that the evidence presented strongly argues for Trump’s conviction.

“The evidence is compelling that President Trump is guilty of inciting an uprising against an equal branch of government and that the charge is rising to the level of high crimes and crimes,” Burr said of his vote.

The Republican Party voted hours later to disregard Burr and issued a formal condemnation of his decision.

“Tonight, the North Carolina Republican Central Committee (NCGOP) unanimously voted to condemn Senator Richard Burr for his vote to convict former President Trump in the indictment he declared unconstitutional,” it said.

Burr called the vote a “sad day for North Carolina Republicans.”

In the CNN interview, Berman told Whatley, “You’ll cancel him because of the vote.”

“We’re not canceling anything,” Whatley replied. “We say we do not agree with one particular voice.”

Several other state Republican parties voted to condemn other GOP senators who voted with Democrats and against Trump.

The former president won the Tar Heel state in the 2020 election and the other Republican senator from the state, Thom Tillis, was re-elected. Tillis voted to acquit Trump.
