Cleveland serial killer Anthony Sowell dies in prison hospital

Anthony Sowell, the Cleveland serial killer who killed 11 women and disposed of some of his victims in garbage bags and plastic sheets, died Monday after suffering from a terminal illness.

Fox 8 reported that Sowell, 61, received the end of life at Franklin Medical Center in Cleveland. He was previously housed on the death row in the Chillicothe Correctional Institution.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that he was moved to the medical facility on January 21st. The report said that the exact cause of his death was not disclosed, but that it was not related to COVID-19.

Sowell was convicted in 2011 of raping and strangling 11 women and hiding their bodies in and around his home on Imperial Avenue, in Mount Pleasant. He was sentenced to death.

The state prison system has notified victims’ families of his death, Fox 8 reported.

“I’m glad he’s dead. God made it happen. I’ll never forgive him,” said the daughter of one of his victims.
