Cleveland Coast Guard rescues ten people stranded on ice fly near park

The Great Lakes Coast Guard on Sunday rescued 10 people – including three children – who were trapped on ice streams that broke away from the shores of Edgewater Park in Cleveland.

Rescue workers and the U.S. Coast Guard received a call around 2:30 p.m. Sunday about a group of people walking out on the ice of Lake Erie and then breaking into two separate ice streams.

Initial reports say only a few people were rescued, but it was later increased to ten people, including seven adults and three children.

The USCG’s Ice Rescue Team from Station Cleveland Harbor and local agencies were at the scene. Detroit Air Station also sent a helicopter for support.

Over the years, many people had to be rescued from massacres that broke down in Lake Erie. In March 2019, the Coast Guard and several other agencies rescued 46 ice fishermen from an ice floe, reports NBC News.

In 2009, 134 anglers were stranded and then rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies in a rescue that made national news, reports The Associated Press.

Hours before Sunday’s rescue, the USCG Great Lakes, referring to Cleveland’s national weather service, warned of dangerous weather and urged residents to ‘not go on the ice and take steps to protect and help yourself’.

NWS Cleveland warned that “dangerous ice conditions will develop over the next few days. It is advisable to stay away from the ice on Lake Erie as ice areas may break off the shore.”

“You can do us a huge favor by telling the public, ‘Do not walk on ice,'” a captain of Cleveland’s emergency personnel was quoted as saying by Cleveland 19. “The lake is not frozen.”
