The carbon fiber muscle motor has a moment.
Classic Recreations has just unveiled a new 1967 Shelby GT500CR Mustang, the first with an all-carbon fiber body. The personal shop, which is responsible for all of Shelby’s officially licensed continuation cars, designed and manufactured the ultra-light bowl together with Speedkore.
The process is nothing, though not high-tech: the store scanned the steel bowl of a 1967 GT500CR into the lightweight leaves, ran it through CAD and then permanently captured it in plugs, which will be used to make future shapes. The resulting exterior consists of autoclaved panels, which form a stainless “exact version” of a Vintage Shelby GT500 – except that it weighs 600 pounds less.

The lighter body does not cost power. Under the carbon fiber hood is a third-generation Ford 5.2-liter Coyote engine with a 2.9-liter Whipple charger. Coupled to a ten-speed automatic transmission, it can handle 810 horsepower and 600-foot torque. Other contemporary features include an adjustable Detroit Speed suspension, JRI shock absorber, four-wheel suspension at the rear, high-performance Wilwood brakes, roll bar and rack-and-pinion steering. The muscle car also rides on three-piece wrapped in BFGoodrich Rivals tires.
“This first car in the production line demonstrates our ability to design and craft amazing cars by collaborating with key partners such as SpeedKore,” said Jason Engel, founder and co-owner of Classic Recreations, in a statement. Angel claims that the carbon fiber Shelby has a power-to-weight ratio “on par with exotic vehicles.”

The sleek new GT500CR starts at $ 265,000 and is available with various drivetrain options. A limited-edition Carbon Edition Shelby GT500CR, with special license plates and a Shelby serial number, starts at $ 298,000 and can be upgraded to the customer’s preference. This is not the first carbon fiber resto mode we saw this week. Speedkore also introduced their 1970 Dodge Charger Hellraiser. The ominous ride, commissioned by comedian Kevin Hart, features a 426 Hemi that delivers 1,000 horses and a 950-foot turn.
