City of Detroit Extends COVID Vaccinations to Seniors, Essential Workers

DETROIT As criticism of the slow vaccinations has increased, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced Thursday that the city will expand the distribution.

Starting Monday, the TCF Center will begin making appointments for Detroiters over the age of 75 and essential workers of “Group B” – which includes teachers and child care workers.

Group essential workers will need to provide the name of their employer and their most recent paycheck to ensure that they are eligible.

Residents can call 313-230-0505 to schedule an appointment. Vaccinations begin Wednesday.

Once an appointment is scheduled, individuals will be given two appointment dates – one for the first dose and another for the required second dose.

Call center staff will contact each scheduled person before the second appointment to remind them.

For greater efficiency and convenience, the city recommends that, if possible, suitable members of the same family or neighbors schedule together and arrive in the same vehicle.

On Friday, the vaccine will be made available to any Detroit police officer or DDOT bus driver who wants it.

The Detroit Department of Health wants to vaccinate all homeless shelters and apartment buildings by the end of February.

The city is working hard to prevent people from sitting in long queues waiting for the vaccine.

Who is eligible to receive the vaccine from TCF?

  • Any resident of Detroit 75 and older
  • Any “good neighbor” aged 65 and over who drives a 75-year-old to TCF center
  • Group B essential workers, including K-12 teachers and childcare workers

Detailed information on the TCF test site is available on the official Detroit Web site. As additional vaccination sites are available online at pharmacies and elsewhere in the city, a map with locations will be added to the site.
