Chrome OS 88 provides a faster way to sign in to websites – using your fingerprint or PIN

On supported sites like Dropbox, GitHub or Okta, Chrome OS now supports the ability to log in to sites with your fingerprint ID or PIN! In fact, any website that supports the so-called “WebAuthn” can log you in much faster than entering a long password.

I’ve heard you say that you use Chrome’s autofill and save your passwords for quick access (unless you’re the person who says you absolutely do not). Well, Webauthn can also be used as a form of 2-step verification for these accounts. This means that instead of having to upload your phone for an SMS code or verification app, you can simply enter your PIN or touch your fingerprint reader to continue!

This may be obvious, but in order to use this feature, you need to set a PIN or fingerprint unlock in your Chromebook’s settings under People> Security & Login. I recommend that if you prefer to use your fingerprint reader, set up one or two fingers on each hand, not just your index finger or thumb on your dominant. There are various reasons for this, but it is mainly a convenience.

I know it’s not the password for sure, but it’s a step in the right direction and I’ll take it. The closer we get to using biometrics for everything, the safer and less annoying it will be to manage our digital identity on the internet.
