The most likely scenario is that the San Francisco 49ers enter the 2021 season with Jimmy Garoppolo at the center. John Lynch, general manager, recently committed himself to it as the current plan, but this has thwarted the turbulent speculation that the team is still looking for an upgrade.
NBC Sports’ Chris Simms has expressed concern over the availability of Garoppolo. The full-back has missed 23 games over the past three seasons due to injuries. But if he’s there, the 49ers are successful. The obvious case is the 2019 campaign during which Garoppolo started all 16 games for the first time in his NFL career, helping the 49ers lead to a 13-3 record, the NFC West crown and a Super Bowl look.
According to Simms, San Francisco could improve the quarterback’s position. With someone else, it would just get another analyst with an opinion. Simms, however, is a good friend of Kyle Shanahan and can understand the thinking of the 49ers head coach better than most. Simms does admit that Shanahan is often reluctant to share any football-related insider information with him because of his position in the media.
What options does Simms have for Shanahan and the 49ers to improve on quarterbacks? He shared three scenarios via Twitter (c / o to Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated). By the way, no one involved Deshaun Watson.
3 options I see for 49ers to upgrade the QB position:
1) Draw a better backup for Jimmy G. No more suffering and inflatable games when he’s out
2) Set up their new guy. I see 6 guys with 1st round talent
3) Trade for Sam DarnoldChris Simms (@CSimmsQB) March 8, 2021
The first seems to be a more cautious option. This probably assumes that San Francisco sees Garoppolo as a potential long-term solution. Of course, the 49ers let their investigation into other quarterfinals during the season, whether that is the case.
Lynch recently said the team should have a better backup plan in case Garoppolo misses time again. The 49ers successfully tried to push through the season last year with Nick Mullens and CJ Beathard, who were largely ineffective substitutes. Adding a better backup might be ideal.
Option two will not necessarily lead to the immediate departure of Garoppolo. San Francisco can make a quarterback and allow him to sit out a season and learn behind the veteran, who already thoroughly understands the offense. The real question is whether Shanahan sees any of the prospects as a suitable long-term replacement for Garoppolo. If so, which one does he like the most?
Simms has said in the past that he feels Zach Wilson, who is expected to be selected as high as No. 2, and Mac Jones will be a good fit in the 49ers attack.
Option three is perhaps the more controversial proposal. While Sam Darnold does possess physical qualities that go beyond Garoppolo’s, there is some debate surrounding his ceiling. Was Darnold limited by talent-deprived rosters in New York, or is his fickle game one might expect even with a more talented roster?
Darnold is still only 23 years old and his salary offers significant savings compared to that of Garoppolo. However, is he a better long-term solution? Exchanging Garoppolo for Darnold would be a gamble.
The good news is that if Shanahan wants Darnold, and the quarterbacks move on from the quarterbacks, the head coach has a friend in New York – former 49ers defense coordinator Robert Saleh, who is now the Jets head coach. Of course, that does not mean that San Francisco can get Darnold at a profit rate. However, it can facilitate the process.
The 49ers’ quarterback options will still be a storyline until all the off-season dominoes fall.

Chris Simms considers these two rookie QBs suitable for Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers

NBC Sports’ Chris Simms recently ranked his best backs in the upcoming draft and raised a few eyebrows. Most consider Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields and Trey Lance in that order as the four best quarterbacks in this draft class. Simms, no stranger to controversial tasks, messed things up a bit. Below are Simms’ top six incoming rookies. Zach Wilson, BYU Trevor Lawrence, Clemson Mac Jones, Alabama Kellen Mond, Texas A&M Justin Fields, Ohio State Trey Lance, North Dakota State Simms was asked by a fan, via Pro Football Talk, which quarterback on the list Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers may desire the most. ‘Well, I think Zach Wilson is the man he has

Simms Can’t Imagine A 49ers Trading Scenario Involving Nick Bosa

Chris Simms led a ask-me-anything version of his podcast, Chris Simms Unbuttoned, and spent a lot of time discussing Deshaun Watson (quarterback) and his situation with the Houston Texans. Watson wants out, but the Texans want to restore the estranged relationship. There would be a big question as to whether Watson would actually be able to trade. His non-trade clause means he will have a lot of say over any potential destination. It’s not a stretch to believe that Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, may have been intrigued by the possibility of adding a talent like Watson to his offense. There is, of course, no urgency with the 49ers, as they have made it clear that they are happy to continue with Jimmy Garoppolo. San Francisco has

Simms wonders if 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan changes how he views QBs

Last year, Kyle Shanahan watched as Patrick Mahomes rallied his team late in the Super Bowl to thwart the San Francisco 49ers’ hopes of a sixth championship. Since Deshaun Watson wants to be from Houston and interested teams are considering what it will take to get the quarterback, the coach would look back on 2017 with at least a little regret. The 49ers could have had Watson – or Mahomes for that matter – and maybe never would have to wonder “what if?” The 49ers transferred both quarterbacks because the plan was to acquire Kirk Cousins during the rebuilding process. Shanahan and John Lynch, general manager, therefore used their first draft pick as a duo on defense member Solomon Thomas. It is assumed that Shanahan is

Jets ‘will answer’ calls for Sam Darnold, who calls Simms ‘last hurdle’ for 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Joe Douglas, general manager of the New York Jets, spoke to reporters on Wednesday and was asked about his quarterback, former No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold. The Jets own the overall number 2 and are considered a strong candidate to secure a quarterback – perhaps Zach Wilson of BYU. The team could also choose to pursue Deshaun Watson if the Texans in Houston ever release their grip on the disgruntled quarterback. Where does that leave the USC product, which has struggled on talent-deprived rosters in its three NFL seasons? “I will answer the call if it is made,” Douglas said when asked if he was open for trade.
