The GR Yaris is the car of the moment. We call the four-wheel drive hot hatch one of the best cars of 2020, despite Toyota’s decision not to sell it here in the United States. This is just as good. Highest gear Chris Harris looks just as much like us, judging by how much he likes to get it sideways.
Harris got the chance to manage the Yaris attack Top Gear’s test track in Dunsfold, England for a recent episode of the program, which allows him to fully explore the limits of the features of rally homologation. And explore them what he does.
It takes almost no time for Harris to turn the car in its “Sport” setting, sending 70 percent of the turbocharged three-cylinder torque to the rear wheels. This makes maintaining giant, high-angle drives particularly easy, as he demonstrates above. He also likes that when the handbrake is jerked, the car disengages the rear wheels from the driving force, allowing a real shift of the hairpin style from the stage rally.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Toyota, please bring this car Stateside. Each staff member at R&T is keen for the chance to drive one. A few of us, myself included, would like to own one.
