Elsewhere, the best LGBTQ movie went to musical drama Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, while the lead actor, the late Chadwick Boseman, won for his performance. Co-star Colman Domingo accepted the award on Boseman’s behalf and called the actor “an incredible human being, scholar, humanitarian and truly an amazing actor.” He added: “Creating complex roles over the African-American experience and about people being marginalized in society and trying to stand up and have a strong voice and fight for representation – that is the legacy of Chadwick Boseman.”

Carey Mulligan has the best actress for Promising young woman, and Emerald Fennell was awarded the best screenplay for the revenge thriller. “I’m just so glad that (the film) resonated, and I’m (Fennell) so grateful that he invited me along for the ride,” Mulligan said in a video for acceptance.

Judas and the Black Messiah star Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor, noting that he was glad that more people learned what his character Fred Hampton “stands for, what he believes and what he does for the black community and the community at large. I really hope that he lives on in everyone’s hearts and minds. ‘
