If there is anyone who is knowledgeable about the drive-through experience, it is a fast food restaurant manager.
CNN reports that the mayor called an expert – the manager of the local Chick-fil-A restaurant – when a drive-by vaccination clinic COVID-19 in South Carolina was backed up.
According to CNN, the clinic opened on January 22, but quickly became overwhelmed, causing the computer system that handles registrations to decline.
The mayor, Will Haynie told CNN, he immediately thought of Jerry Walkowiak, the manager of a nearby Chick-fil-A.
“When I heard that, I called Jerry and asked if he would help us,” Will Haynie, mayor of Mount Pleasant, told CNN. “After looking through it, he said, ‘There’s your problem right there. This is backed up because you have one person reporting people. “Then he showed us how to do it right. ”
Walkowiak quickly organized more volunteers and reduced the hours-long wait to just 15 minutes.
The clinic gave the vaccine to 1,000 people that day, CNN reported. When the people returned on February 12 for their second dose, Walkowiak said he would be there.
Walkowiak told WCBD: “We saw a bit of a hiccup in their transit system, and we still needed people, so we gathered some amazing Rotary volunteers and went there and could only speed up the registration section.”
Officials have turned to big organizers and fast food managers to tackle big events like mass testing and vaccination centers.
According to The Associated Press, the state of Massachusetts has asked Boston Marathon director Dave McGillivray to perform a mass vaccination operation at Gillette Stadium and Fenway Park.
He is in his day job through the pandemic and is part of an emerging group of organizers and other unconventional logistics experts who are using their skills to help the country vaccinate as many people as possible against COVID-19. ‘
AP reports: ” It’s amazing how our opportunity management skills range can be applied to running a massive vaccination site, ” says McGillivray, who has run the marathon for more than three decades.
The pressure for creative solutions comes as virus cases increase nationwide, lines on test and vaccination sites grow and mood flares as government websites crash under the digital weight of millions of people desperately looking for appointments. ”
AP reports that Starbucks and Amazon are supporting vaccinations in Washington state. In California, Disneyland is hosting a mass vaccination effort, as well as Six Flags Magic Mountain, about 60 miles north.
