Chicago police are set to release camera footage related to the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy this week, following calls from city officials, the boy’s family and the mayor for answers.
Adam Toledo was allegedly shot dead by law enforcement after an “armed confrontation”.
The officer who was involved in the shooting, and who has not yet been named, was placed on the desk for 30 days while the incident was investigated.
The Civil Liability Office (COPA) announced on Friday that video footage of the incident would be released “as soon as possible”.
“COPA has determined that certain provisions of state law intended to protect the confidentiality of juvenile records do not prohibit the release of material from the agency related to the investigation into the fatal shooting of a police officer in Chicago on 13-year-old Adam. Toledo does not, ”the agency wrote in a press release.
“COPA is currently working with the Toledo family and their representative to arrange a review of the disturbing video recordings.”
The COPA decision comes after members of the community and Adam’s family asked Chicago police for answers, reports The Washington Post. Elizabeth Toledo, Adam’s mother, was reportedly notified of the death of her son on Wednesday, two days after the shooting.
“I just want to know what really happened to my baby,” Elizabeth Toledo told a news conference on Friday, an ABC affiliate reported.
According to the Post, Adam is believed to be one of the youngest people to have been fatally shot by a Chicago police officer since 2015.
