Chicago PDKim Burgess made a life-changing decision on Wednesday that will surely have a ripple effect on her professional and romantic relationships. Marina Squerciati, who plays the overwhelming officer, opened up TVLine about what’s in store.
In this week’s episode, Intelligence investigated a series of carjackings that led to the crew discovering an illegal child prostitution ring. The sensitive issue also puts Burgess in the way of Michaela, the young girl she previously helped in the January 13 episode, “Tender Age.” After Michaela’s caregiver decided to relinquish her guardianship rights, Burgess stepped in to promote her former witness. The episode ended with the intelligence officer slowly and carefully pulling Michaela out of the parking lot in the back seat and writing fright all over her face. Is Burgess ready to handle this kind of responsibility?
‘I do not think she knows [what she’s getting into]. She just goes on with instinct, ”says Squerciati about Burgess’ big decision. ‘Ruzek hits the nail on the head [when he tells her] “I think you can not see a child loss again,” which I think is true. She realizes that most of these children, especially the older children, will not do so well, so it is a motivating force. ‘
Squerciati added that she believes Burgess and Michaela “have a special bond”, which helps with their dire new situation.
It’s still too early to determine exactly how this important decision will affect Burgess professionally, but it seems like it could be a game changer for her and Ruzek: ‘They were on their way to something, and I do not think it’s going to make sense. they go there more, ”Squerciati explained. ‘There are some things you have to give up [when you become a parent], and I think Burgess thinks maybe it’s Ruzek. I do not know, but I have the feeling that we are going there. ”
Burgess’s situation is even more complicated, as she is a white woman raising a black girl and that it will have certain blind spots when it comes to raising a child of a different race. Squerciati hopes the case is something her character will not ignore, and that she will continue to rely on her good friend Atwater (played by LaRoyce Hawkins) – who raised his little sister Vinessa (Documentary now! ‘s Bobbi MacKenzie) – for support. Burgess released Atwater in Wednesday’s episode to ask his opinion on the possible adoption – a move that apparently helped inform her decision to promote Michaela.
‘I’m really glad the scene took place with Atwater, because I feel without it, you run the risk of it being a white savior-type episode. The fact that she recognized him and talked to him about the racial factor of it, I think, really helps, ‘Squerciati explains.
As for parenting, Squerciati thinks Burgess should consider a lot. ‘There are so many things I’ve been thinking about. I do not know how to do black hair and Kevin [Atwater] can teach me how to do it, ”she adds. And of course there are bigger issues and bigger blind spots that I hope our writers address. But I only thought of little things I would not know Atwater would do, because he had Vinessa we could talk about. ‘
