Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot addresses resignation rumors on Twitter and says she will continue to serve

CHICAGO (WLS) – Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot spent part of the weekend tweeting about what she calls ‘homophobic, racist and misogynistic rumors’ on Twitter.

“It is shocking and disappointing to see some members of the media and verified Twitter handles proclaim this rubbish as the truth,” said Mayor Lightfoot.

Activists have reiterated their call for Lightfoot to resign after a video from a body camera showing Chicago’s deadly shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo was released last week.

On Sunday morning, Lightfoot posted a series of tweets on her personal Twitter account in which there are unfounded rumors that she would resign as mayor of Chicago on Sunday morning.

The tweets read:

‘Good morning from my mansion in Sauganash. Although, seriously, our city has no time for homophobic, racist and misogynistic rumors, today or any day.

It is shocking and disappointing to see some media members and verified Twitter handles proclaim this trash as truth.

If people did not notice it, we have major challenges in Chicago that we need to address TOGETHER. This nonsense that some seem to have the luxury of reveling in has not fed one person, halted the pandemic, housed, housed or rescued one young person.

Anyone who wants to work with me to make progress, I’m ready. Even if we do not always see eye to eye, if you really like this city and want to share in its improvement, let us do the work.

The rest of you, get out of the way.

I will continue to lead a group of willing people across our city who want to do people’s work. The people of Chicago have elected my mayor, and I will continue to serve today, tomorrow, and into the future. Back to work.

PS – I did not move into a fantasy castle in Sauganash. Enjoy your Sunday. ‘
