Chicago Blackhawks Trade News: Josh Dickinson, Ryder Rolston Acquires Carl Soderberg of Avalanche

Another veteran with a contract expiring is on his way out of Chicago.

The Blackhawks send Carl Soderberg to the Avalanche, receive Josh Dickinson and the rights to send Ryder Rolston in return.

Rolston appears from Chicago’s point of view to be the chapter of this agreement. The 19-year-old forward is the son of former NHL player Brian Rolston and was drafted in the fifth round (139 overall) in the 2020 NHL draft. He has just completed his first-year season at Notre Dame, where he scored one goal and five assists in 28 games while playing alongside Blackhawks forward Landon Slaggert. Rolston does not have an NHL contract.

Dickinson, 23, was an unknown free agent and has spent the past three hockey seasons between the AHL and ECHL. He has yet to play in an NHL game.

Soderberg, 35, was signed into the free agency by the Blackhawks shortly after news broke that the team would be without Kirby Dach and Jonathan Toews to start the 2021 season. Soderberg played in 34 games with seven goals and eight forwards, but was largely put off on a healthy scrape after Dach returned from his injury. Soderberg sailed against Columbus on Saturday night, replacing Mattias Janmark in the series and scoring a goal. But his future was never long in Chicago, given his age and the team’s focus on young talent, so it was a chance for the Blackhawks to earn on whatever returns they could achieve.
