Chicago Bears Hire Former Packers DC Mike Pettine

A former divisional enemy joins the Chicago Bears.

The team announced Wednesday that Mike Pettine has been hired as the new senior defense assistant, first reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Pettine has been the defense coordinator for the Green Bay Packers for the last three seasons. In 2020, the Packers defense will end up as a top-10 unit in total allowed yards, allowed per yard per game and passing yards allowed. After Green Bay was eliminated in the NFC Championship game, Pettine’s contract was not renewed and the Packers appointed Joe Barry as a replacement.

The veteran coach, who has been in the NFL since 2002, joins the new Bears defense coordinator, Sean Desai, and will be an important presence for the defensive coach.

When the news broke about hiring Pettine, Twitter had immediate reactions to Bears’ latest assistant.
