The latest version of the Chicago Bears’ search for coaching assistance is to get interested in Philadelphia Eagles assistant head coach Duce Staley. Adam Jahns of Athletics was the first to report Chicago’s interest in Staley, who today asked to be released from his contract with the Eagles. It is also reported that the Lions have an interest in him.
Staley has been coaching in Philly since 2011 and he is highly respected and popular among his peers, his players and fans. If the Bears do sign for Staley, it is assumed that he will move into the full-back coaching role that was released when Charles London is the new QB coach at the Falcons.
The Bears were also thrilled by game coordinator Dave Ragone, who ended up in Atlanta as their attacking coordinator.
The Bears also lost Jay Rodgers, the defensive line coach, to the Chargers, and it is reported that he will be their coordinator / d-line coach for defensive work.
Yesterday it was reported that Ted Monachino, coach of the lineouts from outside, will not return to Chicago.
New defensive coordinator Sean Desai, who has received the stamp of approval from mentor Vic Fangio, as well as some former players, could internally fill Chicago’s empty defensive line, outside lineouts and safety coach’s role, or he could possibly rely on the experience of his mentor to help with some candidates.
There are also a few defensive coaches attached to the Bears who have yet to move, George Edwards and Mike Singletary, and perhaps one of them is in line for a role in Chicago.
For those who score at home, here’s how Matt Nagy’s coaching staff is set up now.
