The general manager of Green Bay Packers, Brian Gutekunst, has surely now put his draft speech together. Gutekunst has been collecting kite miles regularly over the past month, especially with the backs of Pro Days across the country.
Meanwhile, the team meets with numerous players via video conference, and recently met for the second time with Asante Samuel Jr. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the team has mostly completed the position of the cornerbacks with about two weeks left until the NFL draft begins in 2021.
One thing Gutekunst tends to do is identify a player he wants and move up to ensure he gets the player. This year, a similar approach could result, especially given the ten choices the Packers currently possess. But if that happens again, who’s the guy who can target the Packers?
Caleb Farley could be that player. Maybe Greg Newsome from Northwest will also be a candidate. What about an offensive tackle?
Clearly, there is no way to know who ‘the guy’ might be for the Packers this year. The Packers did not even meet with one of their recent drafts in the first round, Rashan Gary, in 2019, so this interest in a player like Samuel could be a smokescreen. But it’s still interesting to imagine who’s sitting near the top of the board.
