Since Ted Thompson returned to Green Bay in 2005 as general manager of the Packers, the team has used the franchise label only twice. In both cases, the team used it on defensive lines – first on Corey Williams in 2008 and again on Ryan Pickett in 2010.
These two movements ultimately had very different outcomes. Pickett would re-sign a long-term deal with the Packers a few weeks later. Instead, Williams was traded days after receiving the label, giving the Packers a good draft pick as compensation.
In 2021, there is actually only one player who would make sense as a potential receiver, but the Packers are likely to follow the Williams approach if they were to mark the feedback Aaron Jones. It could still be a clever move by Brian Gutekunst, especially if he knows he can or does not want to sign Jones again, and if he will be able to work out a deal for a solid draft fee. There is a bit of smoke that connects Jones and the Miami Dolphins, a team that has four picks in the top-50. If Gutey could turn an exchange for the 50th overall pick – hell, if he could even get a third player at 81 – it would be a huge move.
If that doesn’t happen, don’t expect Jones to get a label or to return as the Packers starter in 2021. The task probably belongs to AJ Dillon, the team’s second choice from a year ago. But it’s harder to project a lot of the rest of the grid. Between one serious injury, which is shuffling inside the offensive line and some possible grid cuts that still need to be defended, there are a number of moving parts to predict. Still, a beat writer gave the chance to guess who the team’s first 22 (plus three specialists) will be.

Elgton Jenkins and Adrian Amos were invaluable to 2020 Packers | Packers.com
Jenkins earned a Pro Bowl nod after taking the field for every offensive moment of the season and acting in four different positions to do so. Amos was equally versatile, missing only a few snaps in defense at the end of the blowout.
Playing a label with Aaron Jones could benefit Packers in the concept Packersnews.com (subscription)
Pete Dougherty suggests that the Packers could brand and trade Jones, just as they did in 2008 with Corey Williams. Green Bay gave Williams the franchise label and then traded him to Cleveland for a second round that they would use later. on Brian Brohm. If the Packers do mark Jones, they will have to keep the amount (which is expected to be about $ 8.5 million) on the cap, until he trades.
