CES 2021 will be a virtual event this year as the latest technology for attention, while addressing the coronavirus pandemic affecting the world.
“Masks of all kinds, voice assistants are mature, 5G will be able to drive everything, more 8K TV sets, [and] robots … for more practical purposes, “Greg Kahn, CEO of GK Digital Ventures and the Internet of Things Consortium, told Fox News.
Fox News has compiled a list of some of the technologies that could be virtually front and center from January 11th.
RANSOMWARE WILL PROBABLY WORSE IN 2021: REPORT
8K AND MINI-LED TVs
With about 33 million pixels – four times that of regular 4K – expensive 8K TVs are out of reach for most consumers. This will not stop manufacturers like Samsung and LG from insisting on it at CES.
Mini-LED screen technology, which offers better brightness, color and contrast compared to current LCD TVs, will also be a theme. LG is showing off its own twist on mini-LED with something called QNED.
Samsung is also expected to unveil new Micro LED TVs.
5G FOR REAL
The fast cellular network jumped on CES in 2020, but it was not widely available at the time. Expect more this year because the latest phones, such as the new iPhone 12, are now equipped with 5G.
Hans Vestberg, CEO of Verizon, will present a live keynote address on January 11 with 5G as the theme.
The promise of 5G is future devices like smart glasses with augmented reality. Major service providers are also starting to offer 5G internet.
CORONAVIRUS OVERVIEW OF DELIVERY AMOUNTS TO INCREASE
MASKS, AIR FILTRATION
Masks are now a fashion trend, but with a very practical purpose amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
High-tech masks with proprietary antibacterial, antiviral, filtering and breathing technologies are expected to be unveiled at CES, as well as smart air purifiers and UV disinfectant lights, according to media reports.
LG announced its PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier this summer. It is equipped with HEPA filters and contains a respiratory sensor that detects the cycle and volume of the user’s breathing to adjust the speed of the built-in fans.
INTERNET OF THINGS AND HEALTH MONITORING
Consumers should also expect a range of health monitoring devices and apps.
Portable devices and applications that enable more independence for the elderly are also likely, says Kahn of GK Digital Ventures. “For example, several pill bottles are now activated on the Internet and contain sensors that send data to the cloud regarding the time of opening the shell, and the removal of medication to avoid errors.”
OTHER TECHNIQUE, INCLUDING ROBOTS AND VOICE-CATCHED GADGETS
Some other technologies to note are increasingly practical robots. And more intelligent voice assistants are being offered for more products like Amazon Echo Loop Ring and Amazon Frames, as well as voice door locks.
Electric cars and self-driving technology have also been prominent at CES over the past few years. This year, GM is expected to have a lot to say about its future electric vehicles, with CEO Mary Barra as the keynote speaker on January 12th.
